Understanding your position in the school is imperative to this year’s success and daily contentment. Each person in the school has an authority above them. Some may be thoughtful and kind while others may be harsh and unyielding. Whatever your situation, you can accept your leaders as God’s gifts that He will use to train and develop you into the image of Christ. Often the most uncomfortable settings produce the greatest “nuggets of truth” needed for your future success.

It may be helpful for you to remember that those in authority over you deal with many other projects and problems not involving your grade or classroom. They are working with the “larger” picture of the school. You are only a section of that “larger picture.” Therefore, misunderstanding or misjudging your authority’s decisions is common. Do your students ever misunderstand or misjudge your decisions?

Teachers who learn to respect and follow their leaders will have a greater understanding of their role as an authority over their students. Understanding God’s principles of authority is the foundation of building satisfying relationships at school. As a teacher “plants” seeds of obedience toward the principal, she will reap seeds of obedience from her students.

Dear God, Teach me to respect and obey my authority so that I may, in return, receive respect and obedience from my students.
